ARCH will host a Breakfast Briefing on the 16th July 2015 from 7.30 –8.45am at NexusUCD Belfield Office Park. The topic is ‘Monitoring patients undergoing chemotherapy using mobile phones’ presented by Dr Eileen Furlong.

Dr. Furlong is a lecturer in nursing in UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems and is the joint lead PI on an FP-7 funded multi-national European Commission project entitled ‘Randomised controlled trial to evaluate electronic Symptom Management using the Advanced Management System (ASyMS) Remote Technology for patients with breast, colorectal and haematological cancers’. The project is a pioneering research project that could transform cancer care and significantly reduce healthcare costs by enabling cancer care clinicians to monitor patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast, bowel and blood cancers via mobile phone.This 5-year project, which is being run from 2014-2019, is funded to the cost of €6 million. In 2011 Eileen was awarded with the European Oncology Nursing Society Distinguished Merit Award in recognition for her national and international contribution to cancer nursing. Eileen currently has an honorary clinical role in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where she works in cancer services. In this talk Eileen will share her experiences in the use of mobile phone technology in suporting chemotheraphy and in particular on her experiences of the challanges in getting this project underway.

There will also be an update from the ARCH Centre Director, Michael O’Shea, which will bring particpants up to date on the ARCH research agenda and items of interest from the HSE’s eHealth strategy. The session will wrap up with 20 minutes for Q&A and networking.
